Eggs

Red Star henWe continue to raise Red Star hens in 2013!  Red Stars are a hybrid chicken, resulting from a cross between a Rhode Island Red male and a white Delaware female.  They are high-productivity layers, producing about 300 eggs per year.

We pasture-raise our Red Star chickens, with plenty of fresh air and sunshine.  This means they spend as much daylight time outdoors as they wish (protected from predators by a fence), and they sleep peacefully in their spacious coop, complete with roosts, rafters, and nest boxes.  We give them plenty of fresh water and high-protein layer pellets each day.  What more could a hen want?

Red Star eggs are a beautiful brown color and delicious!  The yolks are dark yellow-orange in color, with a rich and creamy flavor.  The flavor of a fresh egg from a pasture-raised hen is so far superior to the flavor of any other kind of egg.  Make no mistake - "organic" or "cage-free" does not mean that the chickens are allowed to forage outside.  It's the foraging for bugs and greens in the pasture that gives the egg it's rich flavor.  Nothing can compare to the taste of farm-fresh eggs only hours old - these beauties are just exceptionally yummy.  They make such a difference in scrambles, omelets, and any baked goodies!
